威廉·迪恩·豪威爾斯是19世紀(jì)末美國(guó)最具影響力的作家之一。他同馬克·吐溫、亨利·詹姆斯一并開創(chuàng)了美國(guó)現(xiàn)實(shí)主義的新天地。1885年出版的《賽拉斯·拉帕姆的發(fā)跡》,被視為是豪威爾斯的代表作。在該作品中,豪威爾斯并未猛烈抨擊殘酷的資本主義社會(huì),取而代之的是以“微笑”的姿態(tài)書寫19世紀(jì)中后期美國(guó)中小資產(chǎn)階級(jí)的曲折發(fā)展。有些評(píng)論家極力反對(duì)豪威爾斯矯揉造作的現(xiàn)實(shí)主義寫作手法,但在筆者看來(lái),該作品集中體現(xiàn)了作者的時(shí)代責(zé)任感與倫理關(guān)懷意識(shí)。本文借用文學(xué)倫理學(xué)的相關(guān)理論,重新解讀《賽拉斯·拉帕姆的發(fā)跡》,發(fā)掘豪威爾斯的倫理關(guān)懷意識(shí)及其形成因素,展現(xiàn)作者對(duì)于人文精神構(gòu)建的價(jià)值和貢獻(xiàn)。論文由五部分組成。引論部分首先概述了豪威爾斯的文學(xué)貢獻(xiàn)及小說(shuō)《賽拉斯·拉帕姆的發(fā)跡》的主要情節(jié)內(nèi)容,進(jìn)而梳理了國(guó)內(nèi)外相關(guān)文獻(xiàn),提出了該研究的目的和意義,最后介紹了相關(guān)理論框架。第二章主要闡釋19世紀(jì)末美國(guó)的社會(huì)背景及其對(duì)拉帕姆的影響。第一部分展現(xiàn)了19世紀(jì)末美國(guó)機(jī)器化大生產(chǎn)時(shí)代價(jià)值觀的變化。第二部分分析了這種金錢主導(dǎo)的價(jià)值觀對(duì)賽拉斯·拉帕姆帶來(lái)的精神上的痛苦。第三章從兩方面分析拉帕姆通往救贖之路,先闡釋了拉帕姆不再像以前一樣瘋...
