薩繆爾·貝克特（1906-1989）靠一部荒誕劇聲名鵲起,人們對(duì)他的印象也首先是一名劇作家。不過(guò)在二十來(lái)歲開(kāi)始寫(xiě)作時(shí)他選擇的體裁卻是小說(shuō)。1969年貝克特獲諾貝爾文學(xué)獎(jiǎng),也是因?yàn)樾≌f(shuō)與戲劇創(chuàng)作上對(duì)文學(xué)界雙重的貢獻(xiàn)。他的大多數(shù)小說(shuō)在《等待戈多》之前或同時(shí)期完成。從二十世紀(jì)三十年代一直到五十年代,貝克特專注于小說(shuō)創(chuàng)作,他把特有的愛(ài)爾蘭背景、自己在求學(xué)過(guò)程中的學(xué)術(shù)積累、以及戰(zhàn)后零落的歐洲現(xiàn)狀融入自己的小說(shuō),并用越來(lái)越嫻熟的敘事筆調(diào)來(lái)展現(xiàn)。本文集中探討貝克特五部小說(shuō)中的時(shí)間觀念,首先分析了貝克特在《論普魯斯特》（Proust）中關(guān)于時(shí)間的思考,總結(jié)出他的兩個(gè)時(shí)間難題,即人無(wú)法抓住真正的時(shí)間,也無(wú)法用語(yǔ)言將真正的時(shí)間表達(dá)出來(lái)。接著論文緊扣貝克特小說(shuō)的時(shí)間主題,集中探討他的五本小說(shuō),分別是《墨菲》（Murphy,1935）、《瓦特》（Watt, 1945）,《莫洛伊》（Molloy,1951）、《馬龍之死》（Malone Dies,1951）和《無(wú)可名狀》（The Unnamable,1953）,將每部小說(shuō)的時(shí)間主題安排都看作是貝克特嘗試對(duì)那兩個(gè)時(shí)間困境的解答,同時(shí)這個(gè)解答過(guò)程也決定了貝克特小說(shuō)創(chuàng)...
