薩繆爾·貝克特（1906-1989）靠一部荒誕劇聲名鵲起,人們對他的印象也首先是一名劇作家。不過在二十來歲開始寫作時他選擇的體裁卻是小說。1969年貝克特獲諾貝爾文學(xué)獎,也是因為小說與戲劇創(chuàng)作上對文學(xué)界雙重的貢獻。他的大多數(shù)小說在《等待戈多》之前或同時期完成。從二十世紀(jì)三十年代一直到五十年代,貝克特專注于小說創(chuàng)作,他把特有的愛爾蘭背景、自己在求學(xué)過程中的學(xué)術(shù)積累、以及戰(zhàn)后零落的歐洲現(xiàn)狀融入自己的小說,并用越來越嫻熟的敘事筆調(diào)來展現(xiàn)。本文集中探討貝克特五部小說中的時間觀念,首先分析了貝克特在《論普魯斯特》（Proust）中關(guān)于時間的思考,總結(jié)出他的兩個時間難題,即人無法抓住真正的時間,也無法用語言將真正的時間表達出來。接著論文緊扣貝克特小說的時間主題,集中探討他的五本小說,分別是《墨菲》（Murphy,1935）、《瓦特》（Watt, 1945）,《莫洛伊》（Molloy,1951）、《馬龍之死》（Malone Dies,1951）和《無可名狀》（The Unnamable,1953）,將每部小說的時間主題安排都看作是貝克特嘗試對那兩個時間困境的解答,同時這個解答過程也決定了貝克特小說創(chuàng)...
