【摘要】：沒(méi)有荷馬史詩(shī)的英譯便沒(méi)有煌煌壯觀(guān)的英語(yǔ)文學(xué)史和文化史。1860-61年英國(guó)著名詩(shī)人和批評(píng)家馬修·阿諾德在牛津大學(xué)公開(kāi)指責(zé)查普曼、蒲柏、考珀、紐曼等人的《伊里亞特》英譯本均未能傳達(dá)真正的荷馬風(fēng)格,隨即受到紐曼等人的強(qiáng)烈反駁,成為西方翻譯史上的一大公案。阿諾德的判斷影響了斯坦納、劉重德、張今等一百多來(lái)的不少文學(xué)翻譯批評(píng)家,幾成定論。然而,本文通過(guò)考察上述譯者和阿諾德本人的時(shí)代與事功,以及風(fēng)格的認(rèn)知問(wèn)題,發(fā)現(xiàn)阿諾德立論基礎(chǔ)不穩(wěn)、指責(zé)失于偏頗。對(duì)此公案的剖析證明,在荷馬史詩(shī)這類(lèi)經(jīng)典作品的風(fēng)格體認(rèn)與傳譯問(wèn)題上,不可能有唯一的正解,而只能存在一個(gè)具有家族相似性的"真相"集。
[Abstract]:Without the English translation of Homer's epics, there would be no magnificent history of English literature and culture. 1860-61 the famous English poet and critic Matthew Arnold publicly accused Chapman, Pope, and Cooper at the University of Oxford. Newman et al.'s English versions of Iriyat failed to convey the true Homer style, which was strongly refuted by Newman and others, and became a major case in the history of Western translation. Arnold's judgment influenced Steiner and Liu Chongde. Many literary translation critics, such as Zhang Jin and so on, have come to a close conclusion in the past 100 years. However, by examining the times and achievements of the translators and Arnold himself, as well as the cognitive problems of his style, this paper finds that Arnold's theory is based on an unstable basis. The analysis of this case proves that there can be no only positive solution to the problem of style recognition and interpretation of classical works such as Homer epic, but only a "truth" set with family resemblance.
