[Abstract]:This paper studies the spread and acceptance of Cantonese opera in Hawaii from 1879 to 1929. The first Chinese theater in Hawaii was completed in the summer of 1879 and demolished five years later. Then two Chinese theatres opened. Cantonese opera not only attracted a large number of Chinese audience, but also many white and native Hawaiian people. On the other hand, loud noises from instruments such as gongs and drums are often complained of by nearby residents and raided by police. Two theatres were destroyed by fire in 1900. Later, two larger Chinese theatres were built, and fierce competition began. At the same time, Cantonese opera costumes, music and workmanship, combined with English dialogue, appeared on the Hawaiian stage. Cantonese opera performance is no longer a purely commercial entertainment activity, but has gradually been given a variety of social functions: echo the struggle against the Qing Dynasty, participate in public welfare fund-raising activities, highlight the national identity of the Chinese, and shape the multicultural culture of Hawaii.
