[Abstract]:Joyce Carroll Oates (Joyce Carol Oates1938- was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature many times and is an important prolific writer in American literary world. His short story has won many awards in the United States, and occupies an important position in his creation, but his domestic research is relatively blank. In many of Oates's short stories, Gothic style is obvious, focusing on social problems, exposing complex human nature and human thought flow, reflecting the current social realities and contradictions in the United States. These gothic stories are fraught with suspense, violence and terror, and read creepily. Her Gothic short stories do not blindly describe or preach the truth, goodness and beauty of the human world, but try to pass the crisis of modern life through fragments, nonlinear narration, uncertainty, irony, grotesque, open ending, as far as possible. The postmodernist creative skills, such as the interlacing of diachronic and synchronic, the fusion of reality and absurdity, reveal the life of modern Americans from many angles. She uses partial narration and unreliable narration to show the inner perplexity of modern people to the maximum extent. At the same time, she introduced postmodernism writing skills into her Gothic novels, overthrowing and subverting the romantic color of traditional Gothic novels, and endowing her works with unique connotations. This article selects its representative Gothic short story as the research object, from her short story in the real life basis, alienation of the character relationship, multiple themes, Gothic post-modernism writing techniques to explain his short stories in the Gothic post-modernism. This paper holds that Oates innovates the techniques and themes of short story creation on the basis of tradition. In her short story, she creatively combines post-modernism technique with Gothic theme. Endowing his works with a dark and lofty aesthetic orientation and taking advantage of the uncertainty of post-modernist texts has created many meanings for his Gothic short stories, and Gothic postmodernism is the new trend of his creation.
