新歷史主義視角下的《憤怒的葡萄》分析
[Abstract]:John Steinbeck was a writer during the Great Depression of the United States. His works played an important role in American literature and even in the history of world literature. In 1962, Steinbeck, with his masterpiece the Grapes of Wrath, was one of the American classics. Winning the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of millions of bankrupt farmers, represented by the Joads, who were driven from their lands and homes to California during the Great Depression. In the Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck, by exposing the dark side of society mercilessly, describes the suffering of the poor people of his time and opens the door for readers to understand the true state of American society in the 1930s. His works have been interpreted countless times, which has won the author a great reputation and fame. This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction of the whole thesis, including John Steinbeck and his novel the Grapes of Wrath. The first chapter introduces the main theories of New historicism. It consists of two parts: the theory of history and intertextuality of texts by Louis Montrose and the theory of cultural poetics by Stephen Greenblatt. These two representatives of new historicism studied and developed the theory from different angles. The next two parts illustrate the application of the theory of "history and intertextuality of text" (including the history of text and the textuality of history) in the interpretation of novels. The second chapter mainly discusses the history of the novel as a text, and tries to interpret the historical significance of the novel by analyzing the historical events of Steinbeck's time, including the economic depression, sandstorm and Oklahoma migration. The third chapter mainly studies the textuality of the novel history through the analysis of the different history constructed by the readers in different periods and the analysis of the typical characters in the historical construction. Finally, according to Stephen Greenblatt's theory, this paper focuses on the subversion and suppression of the mainstream ideology in the novel, and reveals the subversion of capitalism and patriarchy and the suppression of this subversion by the main characters. In a word, this paper analyzes the novel the Grapes of Wrath from the perspective of New historicism, and reveals the relationship between history and literature, which has been neglected by other schools in the past. By putting the text back into the historical and social context of creation at that time to interpret the text.
