【摘要】：佐拉·尼爾·赫斯頓（1891-1960）是美國(guó)哈萊姆文藝復(fù)興時(shí)期重要的黑人女作家，被譽(yù)為“黑人婦女文學(xué)之母”。其作品的故事背景大部分是在阿拉巴馬州和佛羅里達(dá)州南部。赫斯頓的作品思想鮮明，風(fēng)格獨(dú)特，既能鞭撻白人種族主義，又不落入黑人民族主義的窠臼。本文從男性氣質(zhì)理論的視角解讀赫斯頓被長(zhǎng)期忽略的《約拿的葫蘆蔓》。在這部小說中，赫斯頓展示了美國(guó)重建時(shí)期及其后幾十年南方黑人生動(dòng)的社會(huì)生活風(fēng)貌并探討了不同男性團(tuán)體之間的沖突。 男性氣質(zhì)理論研究源于心理學(xué)，之后進(jìn)入社會(huì)學(xué)范疇。理論家們發(fā)現(xiàn)男性氣質(zhì)是通過相關(guān)政治、社會(huì)和文化環(huán)境而建構(gòu)的。該領(lǐng)域的領(lǐng)軍人物瑞文·康奈爾提出了“支配性男性氣質(zhì)”這一重要概念。支配性男性氣質(zhì)，即處于社會(huì)主導(dǎo)地位的男性氣質(zhì)，且為了維持其支配性地位而對(duì)其他男性氣質(zhì)進(jìn)行壓迫。在黑人男性氣質(zhì)研究領(lǐng)域，理論家們認(rèn)為美國(guó)黑人是被排除在男性氣質(zhì)之外的，這也是他們身份焦慮的根源所在。其后，社會(huì)學(xué)家約翰·巴特勒提出了一個(gè)黑人男性應(yīng)對(duì)身份焦慮的辦法，，即跟隨優(yōu)秀黑人領(lǐng)導(dǎo)者或其他成功黑人的步伐，以此提升整個(gè)黑人種族的地位。另一位頗具影響力的理論家貝爾·胡克斯則提議黑人男性擯棄現(xiàn)存的父權(quán)制身份屬性，創(chuàng)建相對(duì)新型的黑人男性氣質(zhì)。 在《約拿的葫蘆蔓》中，后重建時(shí)期種植園的白人霸權(quán)男性氣質(zhì)讓大部分黑人男性在政治、經(jīng)濟(jì)和社會(huì)上都受到壓迫，他們普遍都有身份焦慮。而在黑人社區(qū)，支配性氣質(zhì)雖然不再是白人霸權(quán)男性氣質(zhì)，但不少黑人男性仍然遭受壓迫，無法實(shí)現(xiàn)健康的男性身份建構(gòu)。這說明黑人男性身份建構(gòu)的失敗不僅是白人霸權(quán)男性氣質(zhì)壓迫的結(jié)果，黑人社區(qū)的支配性男性氣質(zhì)也難辭其咎。雖然黑人以各種形式對(duì)支配性男性氣質(zhì)進(jìn)行反抗，但成功的例子只有少數(shù)。《約拿的葫蘆蔓》體現(xiàn)了赫斯頓敏銳的洞察力及其對(duì)黑人群體的樂觀態(tài)度。在赫斯頓眼里，黑人男性如果要建構(gòu)健康的身份，就要消除暴力，尤其要消除黑人男性與女性的對(duì)立，應(yīng)通過勤懇勞動(dòng)、正視自身問題、尊重女性、承擔(dān)父職和重建非洲價(jià)值觀，來建構(gòu)新型、積極的自我身份。
