Although translated literature is an important part of Chineseliterature, it is hard to find its right status. There is no doubt that the period of theMay 4thwas a turning point of Modern Chinese literature, while what a greatproportion the translated literature accounted for in that period and what deeprelations between it and other literatures were seldom discussed. What’s more,translated literature filled many blank fields of Modern Chinese literature when itwas introduced into China. This passage is designed to try to figure out what rolesthe translated literature played in that time and what relations between it and thedevelopment of Modernity of literature.The translated literature of late Qing dynasty was a prelude to the translatedliterature boom of “May 4th” period, which was also the source of the modernity ofChinese literature. Readers in China were introduced to know foreign literaturethrough translated literature. Besides, foreign literature made a greater difference toChina after it was translated. As we all know, the modern Chinese literature grew upin turbulence and constant changes, therefore, the road ahead of Chinese literaturewas always dangerous. Therefore, translated literature became a key to better themodern Chinese literature. There was no wonder that translated literature couldenjoy such a great popularity among the whole society in that time, and it pleted itself from literary style, language form, aesthetic value and speech
