The impact of the Internet on interpersonal communication

It is now generally believed that the Internet has exerted a great influence on interpersonal communication. But when it comes to whether it is a blessing or a curse, there is always no consensus.

Some believe that the Internet facilitates social communication. They argue that it enables people to get in touch in the blink of an eye. Thanks to E-mail, MSN or ICQ, talking to a friend half a world away takes only a few key strokes. Others, however, take a different view. They point out that the Internet has contributed to the alienation many feel from each other in modern society. It is not uncommon to hear that people email their colleague who is sitting just a few feet away.

Personally, I agree with the latter view. Sure, the Internet helps bridge the geographic gaps, but when a girl would rather let her father read her blog than converse with him face to face, as indicated in the cartoon, it is time for us to rethink the impact of the Internet on our way of communication. The Overuse of Cell Phones

Nowadays cell phones are being increasingly overused. As the cartoon vividly shows, many people are crossing the street. Instead of looking at the way, they are gazing at their cell phones.

True, we can communicate with our friends and relatives more conveniently than before with the advent of mobile phone. But it has also led some people to be addicted to them, which tends to exert a negative impact on our life. For example, overusing cellphones has reduced face-to-face communication among people. It seems that modern people enjoy the convenience of high techology at the expense of interpersonal relationships. This has unfortunately resulted in the alienation between friends and family members.

The unprecedented popularity of cell phones in our society has given rise to many problems. We must look for a quick soltution to this phnomemon, because the situation, if allowed to proceed unchecked, will surely lead to even more serious consequences. (152 words)
