[Abstract]:At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the United States saw a boom in collecting British Georgian portraits. [1] to Morgan, [2] Wydner, [3] Frick, [4] Mellon, [5] Huntington et al. [6] the wealth giants represented by Huntington [6] threw huge sums of money. In 1921, the Blue Boy entered the United States at a price of $728800 (figure 1) and broke the record for the international art trade at that time. [7] marked the peak of the British portrait collection. Looking back at this period of history, and then looking at the bleak status of modern Georgian portraits in academia, one can't help asking: what caused such a thing?
