This paper adopts a new position that “Linguistic Turn” actually falls into two stages: in the first stage, literary studies are principally carried out from the linguistic perspective, i.e. formally and structurally; while in the second stage, a new paradigm is established...

    In exploring the historical vagaries of Western literary criticism, most literary critics tend to consider the critical paradigm resulting from the recognition of the subjectivity of language as the “Linguistic Turn”. This paper adopts a new position that “Linguistic Turn” actually falls into two stages: in the first stage, literary studies are principally carried out from the linguistic perspective, i.e. formally and structurally; while in the second stage, a new paradigm is established on the basis of the recognition of the subjectivity of language. The author maintains that the new paradigm in the second stage is still in the making; it is a kind of criticism that studies the indeterminacy in literature by focusing on context from the perspective of discourse analysis.
