It is in fact only a kind of categorization adopted then for the convenience of quoting, studying and appraising when literary composition was becoming increasingly sophisticated. The classification of writing styles of the Six Dynasties has, since its re-mentioning by Ruan Yuan, attracted the attention of and triggered controversies among many contemporary and modern scholars, and has not formed, even today, a unified recognition. It is in fact only a kind of categorization adopted then for the convenience of quoting, studying and appraising when literary composition was becoming increasingly sophisticated. Although it shows a recognition of the aesthetics, lyricism and entertaining qualities of literature, and a theoretical tendency of enhancing the recognition of literary characteristics, such a recognition is yet still only partial and does not involve the whole. It does not form a conscious differentiation between literature and non-literature, let alone the birth of the so-called pure literary concept of today. Therefore, the literary concept of the Six Dynasties is in essence still traditional.

六朝時期的文筆之分自阮元重提以來 ,引起了近現(xiàn)代許多學者的關(guān)注和爭論 ,至今未能形成統(tǒng)一認識。六朝的文筆之分只是當時人們對日益紛繁的文章制作為便于稱引、學習、品評而采用的一種分類方法 ,其中雖有對文學審美性、抒情性、娛樂性的體認 ,具有強化文學本質(zhì)特性認識的理論傾向 ,但這種認識還只是局部的而非整體的 ,且并沒有形成文學與非文學的自覺區(qū)分 ,更沒有今人所謂的純文學觀念的產(chǎn)生。因此 ,六朝的文學觀念在本質(zhì)上仍是傳統(tǒng)的。
