[Abstract]:Country songs are a branch of American pop music that is popular, sung and enjoyed by listeners in the United States and around the world. The narrative lyrics of country songs establish a good interactive relationship between the narrator and the audience, stimulate the feelings of the audience and influence the audience's view of things by telling the story. The lyrics of narrative country songs have rich interpersonal meaning, and the expression of this meaning plays an important role in highlighting the theme of lyrics, choosing words and sentences for lyric writers, and distributing articles. Interpersonal meaning is derived from the division of metafunctions in systemic functional linguistics. The theory of interpersonal function focuses on how people use language to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with others and influence their behavior. And expressing one's own views on things to elicit or change the views of others (Thompson 2000: 28) .Eggins (2004: 11) defines interpersonal meaning as "a series of meanings that permeate the discourse to express the relationship between the author and the reader and the author's personal attitude" .Halliday (2000) Qi and modality are the main means of realizing interpersonal meaning. In fact, the prosodic characteristics of interpersonal meaning indicate that there are various forms of resources to realize interpersonal meaning. Thompson (2000) explores the interpersonal meaning. Martin and White (20002005) establish an evaluation theory to explain the speaker's attitude embodied in the discourse. It is a useful supplement to the theory of interpersonal function. This paper mainly adopts the frame of Thompson's interpersonal meaning theory combined with the attitude system of Martin and White's evaluation theory to describe and explain the interpersonal meaning of six narrative rural lyrics in the aspects of mood person modality and attitude. The lyrics of narrative country songs are drawn from the real life of ordinary people, express the common feelings of people, and show people's thoughts through stories, and embody the philosophy of life. The mood system embodies the use of a large number of declarative sentences to carry the plot of the whole story and the author's point of view. This feature shows that in this non-face-to-face language communication process, the narrator is in the dominant position, controls the content of the discourse communication, and attempts to involve the audience in the process of the discourse communication. The narrator harmonizes the relationship with the audience through the transformation of the person system, creates the dialogism of the discourse, and draws the distance between the speaker and the audience. The discourse modality system embodies the narrator's personal feelings and opinions and leads the audience to make positive or negative judgments about events or characters. The narrator's personal feelings and evaluation of a certain behavior or thing are further reflected in the attitude system. In the process of expressing attitudes, the narrator attempts to build or share specific values with the reader. This paper uses the interpersonal meaning theory of systemic functional linguistics to analyze the lyrics of narrative country songs in the hope of providing a new perspective for the study of the interpersonal meaning of the lyrics and expanding the scope of the study of interpersonal meaning. It also helps people deepen their understanding of American social culture and values. Due to the lack of relevant studies, the author hopes that this study can attract more researchers to pay attention to lyrics as a special text and make a deeper study of their interpersonal meaning.
