A Royal Society journal publishing research covering the entire range of physical sciences

Aims and scope

Proceedings A publishes articles across the chemical, computational, Earth, engineering, mathematical, and physical sciences. The journal publishes research papers, as well as short reviews containing original and interesting new ideas. The articles published are high-quality, original, fundamental articles of interest to a wide range of scientists, and often have long citation half-lives. As well as established disciplines, we encourage emerging and interdisciplinary areas.

If you are unsure whether your subject area is suitable for Proceedings A, please contact the editorial office.

Editorial Board

Proceedings A has an international Editorial Board with combined expertise across the physical sciences.

Selection Criteria

The criteria for selection are scientific excellence, originality and interest across disciplines within the physical sciences. To be acceptable for publication a paper should represent a significant advance in its field, rather than something incremental.

All manuscripts are assessed by a member of the Editorial Board, who advises the Editor on the suitability of the manuscript for Proceedings A. Based on this, the Editor decides whether the paper should be rejected or sent for full peer-review. Many good papers are rejected at this stage on the grounds that they are insufficiently novel, due to high competition for space.

Manuscripts that pass the initial assessment are peer-reviewed to a high standard and final decisions are based on the reports received from the referees.

How to submit

History of the journal

The Royal Society was founded in 1660 to promote the new or experimental philosophy of that time, embodying the principles envisaged by Sir Francis Bacon. Henry Oldenburg was appointed as the first (joint) secretary to the Society and he was also the first editor of the Society's journal Philosophical Transactions.

In 1800 the journal Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of The Royal Society of London was first published. In 1843 this became Abstracts of the Papers Communicated to The Royal Society of London and then in 1854 the name changed to The Proceedings of The Royal Society of London.

In 1905 the journal expanded to become the two separate publications we publish today, one serving the biological sciences and the other serving the mathematical, physical and engineering sciences.

A selection of ground-breaking historical articles published in Proceedings A are now free to view.
