約翰·杜威被譽(yù)為美國(guó)偉大的哲學(xué)家和教育改良者,其思想在教育和社會(huì)改革方面影響甚廣。本文聚焦杜威的民主和自由主義思想,試圖通過分析其最具代表的兩本政治著作《公共及其問題》（1927）以及《自由主義與社會(huì)行為》（1935）來探索杜威的自由民主政治思想以及二者的關(guān)系。對(duì)于民主,杜威首先明確一戰(zhàn)后美國(guó)民主制度遇到的危機(jī),即人們對(duì)公共參與信心的缺失。杜威倡導(dǎo)參議制民主,公眾需要更多地參與社會(huì)和政治事務(wù)中。對(duì)于自由主義的問題在于自由價(jià)值的危機(jī)。杜威主要是批判他所處時(shí)代的放任資本的自由主義。為了應(yīng)對(duì)該自由危機(jī),杜威重申他對(duì)自由主義的追求,那就是實(shí)現(xiàn)自由、個(gè)性以及智慧的價(jià)值。本文最終得出的結(jié)論是杜威的政治專著為政治哲學(xué)家如何分析問題解決問題樹立了積極的榜樣。杜威最鮮明的創(chuàng)新之處在于消解傳統(tǒng)的民主和自由主義的對(duì)立關(guān)系,明確了自由民主的真正意義。
