This article criticizes this thesis as a fallacy.The numerous seismological entries in Chinese history books over a period of 2,700 old years recorded more than 120 cases of earthquakes above magnitude seven. In the same period, there were 15 occurrences of the "Nine planets line-up". How-ever, none of those major earthquakes happened in a year of the "Nine planets line-up". The biggest known earthquake in history neither has anything to do with the "Nine planets line-up", nor "devastated the earth". The main influence on the earth's gravitation comes from the sun and the moon, while the aggregate influence of the other planets amounts at most to one ten thousandth of that of the moon. Earth-quakes are results of motions of contradictions inside the earth. The influence of interplanetary attraction on earthquakes must not be exaggerated or described as a decisive factor. The thesis of the "Nine planets line-up" catastrophe lacks factual basis and is scientifically untenable.The appearance of this fallacy is not accidental. Scientific and technological advances always serve particular political lines. In late western Han dynasty of our country (early 1st Century A.D.), some Confucians and Mencians, basing themselves on a similar natural phenomenon, preached that the "five planets string-up" Avas a propitious sign, in a vain attempt to save the reactionary slave system from bank-ruptcy. In advocating the catastrophe fallacy, the western bourgeoisie attempts to fool the people and cover up the political and economic crisis of the capitalist world. Their effort to misinterpret natural phenomenon will prove as futile as that of the Confucians.
