    中國西南地區(qū)大河之一。上源扎曲源出青海省雜多縣境唐古拉山北麓查加日瑪?shù)奈鱾?cè)，南流在西藏自治區(qū)昌都縣附近與昂曲匯合后稱瀾滄江，向東南流入云南西部至西雙版納傣族自治州南部，流出國境稱湄公河，經(jīng)緬甸、老撾、泰國、柬埔寨，在越南南部入南海。河長2153千米，流域面積16.4萬平方千米，占瀾滄江-湄公河流域面積的22.5％。支流眾多，較大支流有沘江、漾濞江、威遠江、補遠江等。上中游河道從青藏高原穿行在橫斷山脈間，河流深切，形成兩岸高山對峙，坡陡險峻V形峽谷。下游沿河多河谷平壩，著名的景洪壩、橄欖壩各長8千米，已初步擬定在干流上興建24級梯級電站。河道中險灘急流較多。徑流資源豐富，多年平均徑流量740億立方米。水力資源理論蘊藏量3656萬千瓦，可能開發(fā)量約2348萬千瓦，干流為2088萬千瓦，約占全流域89％。河道中因險灘急流較多，只有威遠江口至橄欖壩段可行木船和機動船。1990年中、老兩國進行了洪水期考察，試航萬象取得成功。1993年新組建的思茅航運公司，開始為老撾、緬甸、泰國運送產(chǎn)品3000多噸。同年，，中、老、緬、泰4國經(jīng)過協(xié)商，對該河段提出共同整治方案。
