[Abstract]:Mussels and some other mollusks cling to solid surfaces using adhesion proteins and plastic-like hard fibers. The fiber has strong tension and can repair itself when some of the internal molecular bonds break. Megan Valentine and colleagues at the University of California, Santa Barbara, created plastic with the same properties by mimicking the chemistry of clams. The molecular bond between iron and an organic compound called catechol makes the material extensible.
